Fantasy, reality, and the internet

Hi there. You're sitting down, presumably, and reading these words on a computer screen. So far as I'm aware, there isn't a print version of this blog, at least not yet. I bring it up because those are the things you can know for sure. Those are the realities of this blog.

I pretend that this blog has over a million subscribers, which is completely false. It's a fantasy, a lie developed so that I can feel like I'm reaching a whole lot of people with my ramblings.

Or maybe I'm lying. Maybe I say that no one is reading this, but actually, the stats on the site are ridiculous. Maybe you think you're the only one you know who reads this, but maybe everyone does. Maybe you all just don't want to talk about it.

I can understand why. I talk about life lessons and SFW stuff most of the time, but there are also some pretty hardcore fetish fantasy stories on here. And knowing that the borderline pornography (or blatant porn) is the most popular, maybe you're just nervous about letting other people know what you like, or about them thinking you enjoy something that you don't.

The point is, we can't be sure. Maybe everything I say is a lie. Maybe it's all true. There's no way to be completely certain.

And that's one of those things about the internet. Reality here is what we make it. There used to be a saying about the internet: "Where men are men, and so are most of the women." And there's something to be said for that. Maybe, when you go and have your cybersex encounters with random strangers, you really ARE talking to that gorgeous girl with all those kinks and all those stories that sound like they're out of an erotic novel. Or maybe you're just talking to some guy who READ those novels.

It goes the other way in MMORPGs, by the way. That's where Male characters are men, and also women. It's better for a woman to play a male character; makes others take her more seriously, for one thing.

Of course, it's possible that this isn't done just for malicious purposes, or just to experiment with other identities. Sometimes it's done because the internet is the one place you can completely change everything about you with literally the push of a button. There's a freedom in that. Want to live as a woman, having been raised as a man? You've got two options. One is meticulous body upkeep, possibly surgery, practice, instruction, and then still living in fear of being caught. The other is to select a different box on your profile.

And is that wrong?

Online, the lines between fantasy and reality blur. They cross, they disappear. Truth and lies become, to an extent, in the eyes of the beholder. Do you want to spend your time paranoid about who is telling you the truth and who isn't? Wouldn't your time be better spent just getting to know the people you're talking to, letting them be who they want to be and deciding, based on that, whether or not you want to get to know them better?

Sure, if you're looking to meet someone off line, knowing who they really are is kind of a must. But the begs the question: which one is really them? Is it the face they put on when they go into public, when they talk to their families and acquaintances, or is it the person they get to be when they have the chance to choose everything about themselves?

I guess it depends on how you define 'real,' doesn't it?
